How to read a multiplication chart

The chart is a grid with the numbers 1 upwards along the top and down the left side. To multiply two numbers, find the first along the top, find the second down the side, and read the square where the row and the column cross. 7 x 8 and 8 x 7 land on different squares but both say 56, which is the chart quietly showing you that the order does not matter. The outlined squares running corner to corner are the square numbers, where a number is multiplied by itself.

A sensible order to learn them in

There are 144 squares in a 12 x 12 chart, which looks daunting until you take away the ones that come free. The 1s and the 10s need no work. The 2s are doubling, the 5s always end in 5 or 0, and the 11s up to 9 are just the digit written twice. Because a x b is always the same as b x a, learning one half of the chart gives you the other half at no cost. What is genuinely left to memorise is closer to 25 facts, and the ones most children find hardest are 6 x 7, 7 x 8, 7 x 9 and 8 x 9.

Patterns that do the work for you

The 9 times table has a trick worth knowing: the digits of every answer add up to 9, and the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied by. So 9 x 6 starts with a 5, and since 5 + 4 = 9 the answer is 54. The 4s are just doubling twice. The 6s are the 3s doubled. The 8s are the 4s doubled, or the 2s doubled three times. And any number multiplied by 5 is half of that number times 10, which makes 5 x 14 easy: half of 14 is 7, so the answer is 70.

Printing and practising

Worth knowing

  • Filling in a blank grid from memory is far more effective practice than reading a completed one.
  • Learn the squares first. They sit on the diagonal, they are easy to picture, and they anchor everything nearby.
  • Short daily practice beats long sessions. Five minutes a day will outrun an hour once a week.
  • If a fact will not stick, work out which neighbour you do know and step to it. Stuck on 7 x 8? Take 7 x 7 = 49 and add 7.

Frequently asked questions

Pick your first number along the top row and your second down the left column, then follow both until they meet. The number in that square is the answer. It works in either direction, because multiplying 6 by 9 gives the same result as multiplying 9 by 6.
