What AVIF is

AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec, released in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. It exists to do one thing well: make images much smaller at the same visual quality. In practice an AVIF is usually 30 to 50 percent smaller than an equivalent JPEG and noticeably smaller than WebP, while also supporting transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and high dynamic range. It is royalty free, which is why browsers adopted it quickly.

AVIF, WebP or JPEG

JPEG is universal and understood by absolutely everything, which is still its main advantage. WebP is a safe middle ground, roughly 25 to 30 percent smaller than JPEG and supported everywhere that matters. AVIF compresses hardest and handles gradients and flat colour especially well, where JPEG tends to band and blotch. The trade-off is encoding time, since AVIF is slower to produce, and slightly older devices that may not decode it.

Browser support

AVIF works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera, on desktop and mobile. Support arrived in Chrome in 2020, Firefox in 2021 and Safari in 2022, so the practical question is how old your visitors devices are rather than which browser they use. If you need to cover everything, serve AVIF inside a picture element with a JPEG or WebP fallback, and browsers that understand AVIF will take it while the rest quietly use the fallback.

Choosing a quality setting

AVIF holds up at lower numbers than you would expect from JPEG experience. Around 50 is generally indistinguishable from the source for photographs, and 60 to 70 is comfortable if the image will be examined closely or contains text. Going above 85 mostly adds file size without visible benefit. If your source is already a compressed JPEG, remember that you are re-encoding something lossy, so aim for a smaller file rather than trying to recover detail that has already gone.
