How the day count works
The calculator counts whole calendar days between today and the date you choose. Today itself is day zero, so a date tomorrow returns 1 day. Leap years are handled automatically, which matters for any countdown that crosses a 29 February.
Counting days one way or the other
There are two common ways to count a gap. The exclusive count, used here and by almost every countdown, gives the number of nights between the two dates: from the 1st to the 8th is 7 days. The inclusive count adds the start day too and gives 8, which is how hotel stays, rental periods and some legal deadlines are counted. If you need the inclusive figure, add one to the number shown.
Why working days differ
The working-day figure counts only Monday to Friday. It ignores public holidays, which vary by country and even by region, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a payroll or contract figure.
Useful to know
- The countdown is calculated on our server, so it stays accurate even if your device clock is wrong.
- Occasions that move each year, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Black Friday, are computed rather than hard-coded, so they never go stale.
- The first days of the seasons use the usual astronomical dates for the northern hemisphere; in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed.
- Past dates work too and are shown as days since rather than days until.
