How the day count works

The calculator counts whole calendar days between today and the date you choose. Today itself is day zero, so a date tomorrow returns 1 day. Leap years are handled automatically, which matters for any countdown that crosses a 29 February.

Counting days one way or the other

There are two common ways to count a gap. The exclusive count, used here and by almost every countdown, gives the number of nights between the two dates: from the 1st to the 8th is 7 days. The inclusive count adds the start day too and gives 8, which is how hotel stays, rental periods and some legal deadlines are counted. If you need the inclusive figure, add one to the number shown.

Why working days differ

The working-day figure counts only Monday to Friday. It ignores public holidays, which vary by country and even by region, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a payroll or contract figure.

Useful to know

  • The countdown is calculated on our server, so it stays accurate even if your device clock is wrong.
  • Occasions that move each year, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Black Friday, are computed rather than hard-coded, so they never go stale.
  • The first days of the seasons use the usual astronomical dates for the northern hemisphere; in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed.
  • Past dates work too and are shown as days since rather than days until.

Frequently asked questions

Christmas falls on 25 December every year. Click the Christmas button above and the exact number of days from today is calculated instantly, along with the weekday it lands on and how many working days are left. When 25 December has already passed this year, the count automatically rolls to next year.

Halloween is always 31 October. Use the Halloween button and you get the days remaining from today, plus the same figure expressed in weeks, working days and hours. The table further down lists it alongside every other upcoming occasion.

Subtract the earlier date from the later one and count the whole days in between. This tool does that against today, treating today as day zero, so tomorrow is 1 day away. Leap days are included automatically when the range crosses one.

It depends what you are counting. Countdowns normally exclude the start day, which is what this calculator does: from the 1st to the 8th is 7 days. Hotel nights, notice periods and some legal deadlines count inclusively and would call that 8 days. If you need the inclusive number, just add one.

In the United States, Thanksgiving is defined as the fourth Thursday of November rather than a fixed date, so it moves between 22 and 28 November. Black Friday is simply the day after. This calculator works both out for the year in question rather than storing a fixed list, so they stay correct indefinitely.

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, which is why it can fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. The calculator computes it with the standard Gregorian algorithm for whichever year is next.

The main day count includes every day, weekends included. The separate working-days figure counts Monday to Friday only and ignores public holidays, since those differ by country and region. Use it as a rough planning number, not as a contractual one.

Yes. Enter any past date and the result switches to days since instead of days until, which is handy for anniversaries, project start dates or working out how long ago something happened.

How many days until a date?

Pick any date or occasion and this calculator returns the exact number of days from today, plus the same gap in weeks, months, hours and working days, and the weekday the date falls on. Moving occasions such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Black Friday are calculated for the correct year rather than looked up in a fixed list.
